Almost there...

In the last 24 hours the chatter about Monopoly City Streets has really taken off, a lot of people are talking about it and asking lots of questions...

So, did Google build it? From the reports you would think so but the application was built by Hasbro's UK digital agency Tribal DDB

Have Google helped us? Of course, they've been great and have really gotten behind the project with all the support we needed.

Who else has helped us? The project was made possible by using the street data from OpenStreetMap, combined with Google Maps, API tastic!

Will you enjoy playing it? We really hope so.

Not long to go now...

Is it really only 4 months or is this going to be an ongoing game with upgrades and new features?

Really excited and looking forward to tomorrow :)

While it says " this isnt gonan be that interesting " I would assume ( and hope ) hasbro will grow this as people use it.

It seems like a VERY good idea.
As long as it runs smooth. and is graphically good i cant see why this wont be a big hit.

What i would LOVE! to see would be monopoly with google maps but with a sim city vibe with it.

that would be ACES!

Erm, and nobody asks which commercial model are they gonna use?
There's gonna be a monthly fee, one single payment?
Some ads? One pro account with more options?

My guess it's a mix between the last two, as many browser based games.. but we'll know that soon :P

Yeah id hope the last to as well.
It would have to be REALLLLLY good for people to pay a fee just to play.

I suppose they *could make some side cash by selling monopoly money for peopel who want more?

MORE DETAIL AROUND RULES:

New players are given no less than 3m Monopoly dollars – to build their empire. If you get in first, you can buy the street straight away. If you're beaten to it, you can make the owner an offer. If they don't reply in seven days, this offer is automatically accepted, no matter how contemptible it may be. (Cue the obligatory "So make sure you log in everyday!" order in the instructions that accompany the game).

A variant of the online game is that a landowner is automatically paid rent, rather than waiting for some poor unfortunate to visit your street before cashing in.

As nice as it is to construct wildly improbable premises around areas you're familiar with, and see the structures displayed on the Google Maps format, putting up buildings and watching the rent roll in could become quite dull. Thus, the online game encourages conflict between land barons by sporadically offering "Chance Cards" where players are given the option to bulldoze properties lovingly built by other land barons, or construct sewage works or prisons on rivals' streets, lowering their rental income.

Also, the game shows players exactly who has been trying to ruin their empire.

@comealot: No, it hasn't started as of yet.

@Frank: It's free!

@Nadia: Really long streets may get broken up into pieces. For instance, if you buy a freeway in the US that runs the length of the country, you will not get the entire freeway, probably just a few miles worth. Believe me, that will make it a good thing.

@Dan: It's running for 4 months now. Whether or not they'll extend it, who knows...
